Concerts

New!   Alicia Svigals' Klezmer Rock Project

Alicia brings a power rock rhythm section on board and regales the audience with high energy klezmer that's unique and exciting...great for young audiences.

New!   Alicia Svigals and Marilyn Lerner: Klezmer Unfettered

Alicia and Canadian jazz piano virtuoso Marilyn Lerner join forces to create Jewish instrumental music like you've never heard it before, spinning symphonies out of simple melodies on the fly. Expect the unexpected!

New!   Golems of Gotham

With words and original music for unaccompanied violin, Svigals and author Thane Rosenbaum present their adaptation of the Golems of Gotham, the acclaimed third novel in Rosenbaum's post-Holocaust trilogy (whose main character, a klezmer-fiddle playing child, is modelled in part on Alicia!). A panel discussion moderated by a literary critic is also available for after the show.

The 92nd St. Y's program director Arielle Listokin wrote to Alicia about the premiere of Golems of Gotham: Words do not do justice to the beautiful performance you gave. I have never before seen a Y audience connect so completely with a performer the way they did to you.

Alicia Svigals' Fidl Ensemble

Authentic old-world sound as heard on Svigals' album Fidl: violins, tsimbl, bowed bass, wooden flute, all unplugged. Haunting and ecstatic klezmer.

Mikveh

Fidl Kapelye

A great big klezmer folk string orchestra, with an exciting and earthy sound. (Instant Fidl Kapelye workshop available for school and community groups in conjunction with this show.)

Klezmer for Kids

Fun and educational program for kids of any background, introducing them to Jewish songs, dances, rhythms, the Yiddish language and the youthful spirit of klezmer music. (Oomchicks workshop -- a kids klezmer band -- available for school and community groups in conjunction with this show).

Folk Fiddles of the World

Alicia on a bill with three or four other violinists from a wide array of ethnic traditions: can include Greek, Irish, Indian, Arabic, Finnish, Persian and Chinese, to name a few. (Fiddle styles of the world workshop available in conjunction with this show.)

Vodkazak

Program of Lubavitcher nigunim arranged for klezmer quartet, featuring Alicia, mandolinist Jeff Warschauer, bassist Marty Confurius and accordionist Sy Kushner. (Music of Chabad workshop, with a noted scholar of Hasidic music, available in conjunction with this show.)

The Third Seder

Multimedia audience-participation 'seder', with theater, matzo art, Manischewitz wine, modern dance, and Passover songs, both classic and obscure, featuring cutting-edge New York artists in several disciplines.

Women in Klezmer

Alicia on a triple bill with two other prominent female instrumentalists and singers; each act plays a twenty minute set and all come together at the end for an onstage jam. (Panel discussion with artists also available.)

Klezmer fiddle dance party

High energy concert, with instructor to teach and lead the audience in dancing through the whole show.

With jazz guitarist Ron Jackson and his band, an exploration of the space between klezmer and mainstream jazz.

Alicia Svigals with Moguilevsky and Lerner

Avant-klezmer Argentinian duo collaborate with Alicia on de- and re-constructed klezmer melodies with a large helping of group improvisation.
